Day at the Farm

This week the weather was better and so our play group was able to go to the farm. Joshua had a lot of fun watching the animals and the kids run around. It was a little farm, just about 30 acres. The lady who owned it started by just having one beef cow when she realized that her grandchildren were growing outwards more then they should. She blamed it on the fat in the meat they got from the grocery store, so she set out to make leaner meat. Her cattle are even kept inside all winter so that they do not have to build up the extra fat to survive the cold. Her farm gradually grew into 30+ cattle, some pigs, laying chickens, and horses. The chickens. They had two kinds of chickens, normal laying hens like the ones shown below, and some African chickens that lay eggs with a greenish hint to them. The green eggs have lower cholesteral then normal eggs.

The pigs. I think these were Joshua's favorite because they were running around quite a bit.

The horses. I didn't get a good picture of their horses, but here is a picture of Joshua enjoying watching the horses.

And the cattle. The ones in the front are pregnant cows, the steers they slaughter are in the back of the picture.
Going to the farm made me excited for when we get a house and can start having animals again. We did plant a garden this year, but unfortunately our apartment is on the north east side of the building, so our plot hardly gets any sun. We put the tomoates in the sunniest spot, and they are starting to grow a little and have even got some blossoms, but the rest is doing poorly. Maybe next year I will try in pots so I can move them into the sun.
