In an effort to save money we decided to drive the 863 miles to Knoxville instead of flying. It is a 14 hour drive and then there are stops on top of that. We left at 5:30 in the morning. We plugged in the portable DVD player for a full day of brain mushing for Joshua and ate breakfast in the car. We had packed lunch so we stopped at a rest stop. We spent most of the time racing between trees. Later the kids engaged in a rousing game of running up the hill and rolling back down. While they were doing that I went up to fill the water bottles and a lady started talking to me. She pointed out the kids and said they were cute. Then she asked if they were twins. I guess they were far away and rolling on the ground, but they are pretty obviously 2 years apart.
Then we drove some more and more. On the way down we passed 200-300 utility trucks headed north in preparation for Hurricane Irene. After way to long we finally made it to Tennessee. As miserable as the drive is we decided that driving for 15 hours is easier than flying for 7 hours. The kids are restrained by the car, not by us, they can nap, we can eat what we want when we want, and there is no security.
